Life record of Herman Hohulin
First born son, Herman better known as Herm or “Unk” was born April 17, 1899, in Goodfield, Illinois. Herman was very intelligent and conscientious, always doing good for the sick and poor. (was so kind to his horses and all animals)
Herman had a hard life from his first day at school, until his last breath. Moved with his parents to Morris, Minnesota in 1907, had no youth, worked hard doing the work that others failed to do. From a child he would help Mom Do dishes, scrub floors. Was so kind and good to his little lame sister Hanker.
Herman repented young, but never gained baptism. Many were the times Herman folded his hands, knelt in prayer and looked up to his God, pleading for forgiveness. (Everything is known to God)
Herman worked hard on the farm and lost everything, worked at the flour mill in Fort Scott, Kansas then was a carpenter in Wichita. The four happiest years of Herm’s life was in Wichita until the depression came. He walked the streets for work and would work all day on a Qt. of milk, had no money for food. Came to Peoria in 1934, worked at Caterpillar for many years.
Herman married Eva Mae Herrmann, from Sabetha, Kansas eldest daughter if Albert and Lydia (Hartter) Herrmann on May 23, 1936, at the home of Eli and Lois Hohulin in Goodfield, Illinois. Build a beautiful home in Morton.
After Herman started failing in health, sold their home, lived one year with the folks, moved to an apartment at 1501 N. Adams St. Hank spent many hours with Herm through his long illness. The only good thing Herman had on earth was his dear wife Eva, she cared for him day and night, God will bless and keep her, and remember all her goodness.
Eva repented and was baptized in June 1951 at Morton, Illinois. A few days before Heman died he said tell “Dad, Mom and Hank not to worry about me, I am going to meet a righteous Judge. I want to go to my cool grave, the angels will bear me away on their snow wings, to my eternal home.”
Herman died at 2:45 Tuesday February 26, 1952, in their apartment at 1501 N. Adams St. Peoria, Illinois. Had a beautiful death, he just slept away. Eva gave Herm a very nice burial, 530 friends registered the evening of visitation. Funeral services were at 10:30 at the Apostolic Christian Church in Peoria. Joe Getz had the service. Burial was in church cemetery at Goodfield, Ill. Gus Scheitlin a lifelong friend of Herman, prayed at the grave. Six cousins, sons of Uncle Sam Hohulin carried Herman to his grave. Friends sang, “Sleep on beloved now and take your rest.” We loved you but Jesus loves you best. The singing was beautiful, by friends from Tremont and Peoria. Sang Herman’s favorite song No. 97 in the Gospel Hymn.
