Life history of dear mother Leah (Plattner) Hohulin
Eldest daughter of Jacob and Mary (Neuschwenger) Plattner. Born October 28, 1875, at Eureka, Illinois. Being the eldest her play-days were few. Early in life, she took care of the younger children, did the family sewing. Leah had a short country schooling, just read a few pages in her new fourth grade reader was so proud if it, then her school-days were over. Leah worked for all the neighbors, at the home of Dr. Crowford.
Leah repented, was baptized in the Mackinaw river, by Elder Zimmerman, in the Apostolic Christian church at Mackinaw-Dells.
Sunday April 17, 1898 Leah Plattner was Married to Tim Hohulin in the Mackinaw-Dells church. To this union nine children were born. A wonderful mother, never tired doing for her children.
Lived in Goodfield, Illinois until 1907, moved to Morris, Minn. There was much work in building a new farm home, barns house and church. Cooking for the carpenters, hired-hands, and road-men. Living across from the church, there was much cooking for all the visitors, many Sundays at noon Mom went home, to bake pies, kill chickens, had big crouds (crowds) for supper. And over-night.
The first memories I have of my dear mother, was seeing her pray and sewing far into the night with tears in her eyes, sewing a scrap of goods into a little dress, soling shoes, baking for our school-pails, cutting the boys hair, mending by lamp-light. Teaching us right from wrong, thank God for such a mother.
October 1921, we moved to Fort Scott, Kansas. We worked hard, harvested little, in the spring there were floods, by mid-summer everything was as brown as a paper-sack. All the wells went dry, hauled water for the cattle from the river. In the garden all the vegetables were burned. At last we gave up farming.
March 3, 1932 moved to Peoria, Illinois. 1205 E. Nebraska Ave. Mom had a stroke, Hannah left her job, went home to care for Mom, God spared our Mother. All her children live in or near Peoria. Have 23 Grandchildren, 10 Great Grandchildren. Mom and Hank had many happy times together, 1957 New Years Eve, Mom made potato salad, fried fish, the last supper she cooked. I baby-sat at Ehrlich. All other New Years Eve Mom and I were together, ate lunch, welcomed in the New Year with a prayer, ask to be forgiven, rang the bells, Mom said she missed it. Jan. 2, 1958 Mom came out in the kitchen to talk with me, told me not to worry if a stone was to heavy leave it lay, talked about the Bible. Jan 3 Mom a stroke, did-not get to tell her good-by. Died Jan.4 1958 at 9:45 A.M. at St. Francis Hospital. Mom had three beautiful dreams, Jesus came to get her and her children. Mom is resting in the Springdale Cemetery. At home with God.
