Life history of Hannah Lou Hohulin
Fifth – Child Hannah, better known as Hanker or Hank, was born May 27, 1908, in a beautiful new country home, in Stevens County Morris Minnesota. I was sick for years, had every childhood illness. When I was four years old, I had Polio, my mother prayed that I would die, to be relieved of my suffering. My childhood was not like other children.
July 17, 1939, Dr. H.E. Cooper operated on my foot, I was in a cast and on crutches, was off of work four months, My loving Mother, her kind hands never tired caring for me. May14, 1946 I had another operation by Dr. Paul Roark. I had a beautiful room at the St. Francis Hospital in Peoria, Illinois. My years of suffering have brought me close to my God.
In October 1921, we moved to Fort Scott, Kansas, where my short country schooling ended in the seventh grade. December 9, 1924, I repented, God gave me peace. December 17, 1924, was announced. Jan. 11, 1925, on Sunday February 15, 1925, I was baptized in the Apostolic Christian Church at Fort Scott, Kansas. There were eight of us baptized that evening.
I did day-work at the Karleskints, Calhouns, and the O’Dells. Dort remember how you and I had to take home the chicken bread? Helped the folks on the farm, worked in the field, milked cows. I worked at the home of Dr. and Mrs. C.F. Young from Sep. 15, 1929, until Feb. 12, 1932. Went home helped get ready for our sale.
The last of Feb. 1932 Hank, John, Dort and Little Ella started on our endurance flight from Fort Scott, Kansas to Peoria, Ill. In the old model T Ford sedan, we called it the T-B wagon. Had to stop at every other garage, for sparkplugs, Oil, or Gas. Dort ate much food, Ella had to have a Ice Cream cone for each hand, adding up the whole total, it was hard on Hank’s purse. John, our faithful driver never got mad or said a bad word. After spending a night at the home of Edward Grimm, we got a much-needed rest, and a good breakfast. When we got to Canton Illinois, the old model T Ford refused to go the rest of the way to Peoria. We went by bus, it was evening March 3, 1932, that we landed at 1205 E. Nebraska Avenue, Peoria, Illinois.
I worked at the home of Tom Conrons on Moss Ave. four years. June 23, 1936 I started working at the Glen Oak Bakery Co. After 15 years of hard work, James F. Duncan presented Hannah with a 15 year pin on Saturday June 23, 1951 July 10, 1951 July 14, 51.
My hobbies are collecting bells, I enjoy reading and music.
Do hand work of every kind, my hands are always busy.
Hannah is saving her money to pay her way into the Buehler Home for the aged, where she will rest, and live the last days of her life, looking forward to a home not made by hands, that eternal in heaven.
